Khalil or Halil (Arabic: خليل, [xaliːl]) means friend in Arabic and is a common male first name in the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, the Balkans, and South Asia. It is also a common surname having origins in the Middle East, India, and Africa (although largely concentrated in Arabia). The term, however, is that which is ascribed to the Patriarch Abraham by the Koran (as "Khalil Allah"), which is a derivation of the Patriarch's Hebrew title, Kal El ( קל-אל), which means "voice of God".[44][45]
